In her wonderful and thought-provoking book Lionness Arising (which I highly recommend), Lisa Bevere speaks of hearing the Lord say, “Tell My daughters to write their lives well.” There is a purposefulness required in fulfilling that directive; a determination fueled by resolve to follow God’s path and obey Holy Spirit leading – moment by moment, day by day. We are not creatures of happenstance, or we shouldn’t be! We get it right every day when we place life in the Spirit over life in the flesh; when we recognize that it is God’s purposes, His Word and His Spirit, that define our identities, our words and our actions. Then we are writing our life well.
John 15:5 reveals the profound importance of our connection to our life source. Jesus says:
I Am the Vine, you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
Obviously, then, writing a life well is dependent upon a submitted spirit, a life released into God’s care, a will desiring and requiring what God wills. It is a two-step process – submission and then action, faith and then doing (James 2:17-18)
God’s admonition to us through Lisa Bevere to write our lives well is only successfully attained when attending to the care, feeding, and strengthening of our spirit. Your life, in Christ, controlled and guided by the Holy Spirit is the assurance of success – a beautiful life, a life of blessing for you and the “others” He needs you to bless – a life well written!
